“You Became My Family”

23 Ιαν 2025 | ΑΛΗΘΙΝΕΣ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΕΣ

Dina*, a young woman who left her homeland to live freely, arrived in Athens with dreams of a better life and more work opportunities—something she quickly realized was a myth.

When we first met her, she was already in the later stages of pregnancy and living in a dark, freezing basement. Her emotional state was fragile as she struggled with constant nausea and vomiting, leaving the house only for the absolute essentials. Despite it all, her simplicity and warm smile immediately won us over, even though her eyes always carried a hint of sadness.

We stepped in to help with her medical appointments and preparations for the arrival of her baby. We gathered baby clothes, washed and ironed them, and found her a crib, stroller, and many other essentials. At the same time, we visited her regularly, and on days when she felt well, we went out so she could enjoy some sunlight. During our walks, Dina shared the hardships she had endured. Yet, at the end of each conversation, no matter how sad, she would smile and tell us how grateful she was for what she had today.

On her birthday, just a few days before giving birth, we visited her with gifts and flowers. She was home alone, and when she saw us at the door, her face lit up as she said, “You and this baby are my family.”

A few days later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who is now already 9 months old. And yes, he has the same warm smile as her. 💖
